The Distillers – The Distillers
The Distillers, in case you didn’t know, are a female fronted punk band. They play their music fast, angry and loud complete with vocals which can only be produced through years of hard chain smoking or a couple of weeks gargling hedgehogs. One thing you may notice about it is that sometimes it all sounds the same. Not exactly the same, the songs are different enough to make it hard to get bored half way through, but sometimes you feel that once you’ve heard one four chord sequence played fast with someone shouting on top you’re heard every four chord sequence played fast with someone shouting on top. This is where songs like Ask The Angels (slower with an impressive guitar solo), Girlfixer (even faster than usual) and Gypsy Rose Lee (practically chilled out by the Distillers standards) come in. They are dotted around the album and break it up well, meaning you don’t get sick of it. The songs themselves are good, and Brody’s vocals are hoarse and angry, which is also good. The problem is it’s hard not to compare this to Sing Sing Death House, where the songs are better and Brody is even hoarser making for a better album overall. Good but you’re better off getting the follow up if you haven’t already.
